• Nikki Haley is a Coward

Haley’s recent announcement that she will vote for Trump demonstrates again that the GOP has no courage or principles.

Yet another Republican has surrendered to Donald Trump’s extremism. This time, former Governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley, kissed the ring, announcing that she would vote for Trump in a speech at the Hudson Institute. In doing so, Haley joins a litany of Republicans who, despite posturing as moral martyrs for so-called moderate Republicanism, have put their political careers over their principles. It is yet another example of how broken the GOP has become.

    Nikki Haley’s Feigned Opposition

What makes Haley’s decision to endorse Trump so noxious is the way she consistently ran her campaign as a sort of moral correction to Trump’s sickening politics. Even before campaigning for president, Haley criticized Trump’s administration and conduct after he left office. In an interview with Politico, she said, “Never did I think he would spiral out like this. … I don’t feel like I know who he is anymore. … The person that I worked with is not the person that I have watched since the election.”

Throughout her time in his administration and even before its existence, she carefully navigated around directly and publicly criticizing Trump while avoiding the sycophantic approach others within the Trump administration upheld. However, when it came to her bid for the presidency this year, Haley was forced to show her real feelings towards the former president, lambasting him for his memory, calling him “toxic” and lacking in “moral clarity.”

“He’s made it chaotic. He’s made it self-absorbed. He’s made people dislike and judge each other. He’s left that a president should have moral clarity, and know the difference between right or wrong, and he’s just toxic…”

This direct criticism should, in a reasonable person, merit a commitment to avoid allowing such a toxic figure, a label Haley herself applied to Trump, to get into the White House. Instead, Haley demonstrated the opposite is true with her. Her criticism and her seemingly principled concerns about Trump only served as a means to bolster her campaign, and when they were no longer useful, she was perfectly willing to throw them away at the point of earliest convenience.

Principled Trump Supporter? Not so Fast

When evaluating a political figure’s self-stated reasons for supporting a candidate, it is important to determine whether their statements match their actions. Such a statement is obvious and should go without saying, but in the case of Haley’s defense of her Trump support, it needs reiterating because very few of her stated reasons for supporting Trump should actually lead her to support the former president.

In her remarks before the Hudson Institute, Haley explained that:

“As a voter, I’d put my priorities on a president who is going to have the backs of our allies and hold our enemies to account; who would secure the border, no more excuses; a president who would support capitalism and freedom; a president who understands we need less debt, not more debt; Trump has not been perfect on these policies — I have made that clear many, many times — but Biden has been a catastrophe. So, I will be voting for Trump.”

None of these stated concerns can justify supporting Trump. They barely did when he was running the first time around, and they certainly don’t justify it now. Even on the calls to secure the border, which Republicans have made a rallying cry, Trump has demonstrated his lackluster commitment. When the Biden administration attempted to negotiate a deal with the House GOP, and it seemed like it was finally within grasp, Trump and his allies encouraged the House Republicans to kill the bill. Even as President Biden stated he would close the border if the House passed legislation to give him the power to do so, Trump and his allies knowingly opposed said action.

Supporting Trump in the name of backing our allies is also a laughable canard. Trump has repeatedly mused about leaving NATO even in the face of Russia’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine. In one instance, he said that he would allow Russia to do “whatever the hell they want…” if a NATO member didn’t pay enough. As I noted before, NATO has no payment requirement like the one Trump advocates; it is a requirement he conjured out of thin air.

I could go on about how Trump ballooned the debt or how the idea that the Democrats are somehow socialists who want to destroy capitalism is absurd, but none of that changes the simple reality that Nikki Haley knows this. She is perfectly aware that Trump is antithetical to her principles and announced her support for Trump anyway. Nikki Haley knows full well that Trump will not be her ideal candidate or even adequately address the concerns she claimed to hold dear, but she also knows that as long as she spoke her mind, her career would be over within the GOP. She made the calculation, and she chose her path. She’s just like all the rest of the GOP, entirely without character.

  • Video Announcement and: Biden vs Trump Debate

In a move that could shift the state of the race, Biden has agreed to debate Trump early

    Thumbnail by NateTalkstoYou

    Good morning everyone,

I hope you all are doing well and that you are looking forward to an easy weekend. As my readers are likely aware, President Biden recently announced that he would debate former Trump in June and September, dishing out a few jabs at the former President.

The first debate will take place on June 27th and will be hosted by CNN, something that is sure to draw a bit of amusement from the Trump crowd, considering the former President’s hatred of the network.

While I will not be able to release my video going over the upcoming debate this week, I expect to have it out by next Thursday at the latest.

Thank you very much and Happy Memorial Day,

    Conor

  • No, Donald. The FBI Didn’t Try to Kill You

Trump’s claim that the FBI tried to kill him is both absurd and indefensible

Image by Tibor Janosi Mozes from Pixabay

Donald Trump is at again with the conspiracy theories, claiming that the FBI was authorized to assassinate him. The absurdity of the claim, combined with the speed at which conservative commentators parroted the blatant lie, demonstrates yet again that the GOP has become thoroughly divorced from reality.

    What is Trump Talking About?

The claims by the Trumpist media landscape started with Trump himself misrepresenting an unsealed document from the FBI. The document, which establishes the operating procedure for the search of Mar-A-Lago, contains a section regarding the appropriate use of force for all FBI agents as well as when it is appropriate to use deadly force. Upon the release of the document, the former president falsely claimed on Truth Social that the FBI was going to assassinate him, saying:

“WOW! I just came out of the Biden Witch Hunt Trial in Manhattan, the “Icebox,” and was shown Reports that Crooked Joe Biden’s DOJ, in their Illegal and Unconstitutional Raid of Mar-a-Lago, AUTHORIZED THE FBI TO USE DEADLY (LETHAL) FORCE. NOW WE KNOW, FOR SURE, THAT JOE BIDEN IS A SERIOUS THREAT TO DEMOCRACY. HE IS MENTALLY UNFIT TO HOLD OFFICE — 25TH AMENDMENT!”

Other figures also promoted the ridiculous assassination claim. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, whose conduct in the House has been less than ideal, amplified the nonsensical claim, saying:

“I made sure that he knew. The Biden DOJ and FBI were planning to assassinate Pres Trump and gave the green light. Does everyone get it yet???!!!! What are Republicans going to do about it? I tried to oust our Speaker who funded Biden’s DOJ AND FBI, but Democrats stopped it.”

Of course, this is inaccurate. The section regarding deadly force is not an order to use said force, contrary to what Trump and Rep. Greene claimed. Instead, it is a standard policy statement for warrants and searches. Rather than an encouragement of lethal force, the section specifically outlines limitations for the use of lethal force by FBI operators.

In a statement to The Associated Press, the FBI explained that “The FBI followed standard protocol in this search as we do for all search warrants, which includes a standard policy statement limiting the use of deadly force.” Indeed, the policy is also present in the Justice Department’s policy manual, which is also summarized on the FBI’s website. Simply put, Trump is either ignoring the fact that the very thing he is complaining about actually reduces the risk of him getting shot, or he doesn’t understand it at all. Neither option is ideal for a man running for President.

    Why the lies?

Trump is notorious for his separation from the truth. That much has been well-established at this point, but why he is lying about this is a bit more complicated, both in its absurdity and rapid spread. What is particularly useful for the former president is the feeling of martyrdom that he has spread around himself and his followers.

By playing off the fears of his constituents, Trump can insulate himself from the reality that he is, at his core, a corrupt demagogue, all while engaging in demagoguery regularly. Instead of addressing the question as to why he took classified documents that didn’t belong to him, Trump can insist that the prosecution is biased against him, using the illusion of an assassination attempt to bolster his claim. Never mind that the documents he held onto contained nuclear secrets or that said documents were not his personal property. If Trump claims his life was on the line, plenty of people will be willing to believe it.

So long as Trump can spew nonsense, there will be people willing to accept his words as gospel. That his claims are easily disproven with a quick search or basic research doesn’t matter because the truth isn’t useful to the Trumpist agenda. So long as Trump continues to feed his base and allow them to maintain their delusion of martyrdom, they will repeat his lies even if they undermine the public discourse.

  • New Video: Candace Owens Thinks Russia is Better Than America. It isn’t

In a new video, I debunk Candace Owens’ false equivocation of the United States and Russia.

    Good evening everyone,

I hope you are doing well. I wanted to remind you all that I recently uploaded on my YouTube. Prior to her firing from The Daily Wire, Candace Owens released a ridiculous response to commentators Jon Stewart and Fareed Zakaria over their criticism of Tucker Carlson’s horrendous Russian trip.

Throughout her segment, Owens relies on anecdatoes and outright lies about the quality of life in America compared to that of Russia. It was ridiculous then and it is ridiculous now. If you want to check it out, you can find it on the link presented above. As always, sources included below.

  • Expel Marjorie Taylor Greene

Rep. Greene has proven herself a waste of the taxpayer’s money and is utterly unfit to serve in government. It is time to remove her.

House Creative Services, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons

Marjorie Taylor Greene has started it all over again, this time provoking a fight that led to a back-and-forth on the floor of the United States House of Representatives. The fight was provoked by Rep. Greene (R-GA) after she insulted Rep. Jasmine Crocker (D-TX), saying, “I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading.” This example of petty insulting nonsense by Rep. Greene is yet another example of a long list of infractions by the Georgia firebrand and should, at the very least, serve as a reminder that Rep. Greene has no business being a representative at all. It is time to expel Marjorie Taylor Greene.

    A Long List of Nonsense

Right off the bat, I’d like to make my position clear. I have no respect for Rep. Greene or her politics. Her understanding of politics is subpar, her views on foreign policy are disastrous and her contributions to the body politic have almost always been an embarrassment. Nobody should be surprised that I want her out of the House.

But far from merely annoying me or giving me another reason to question Greene’s dedication to serving the well-being of the American people, this outburst exemplifies how fundamentally unworthy of power Greene is and always has been.

From the beginning, she engaged in noxious conspiracy theories and has used rhetoric that has veered into almost slanderous and sometimes downright threatening behavior. On more than one occasion, Greene has gone far beyond the realm of reasoned discussion and debate and into the absurd. In one instance, she accused Hillary Clinton of killing John F. Kennedy Jr., who tragically died in a 1999 plane crash. In another series of incidents, Greene has insinuated that several shootings are false flags and has harassed Parkland shooting survivor and gun control advocate David Hogg. She has also engaged in 9/11 conspiracy theories. Needless to say, Greene hasn’t brought the best to bear even before she became a congresswoman, but she wouldn’t stop there.

    Veering into Violence

Even more than simply engaging in outrageous conspiracy theories, Greene has called for violence against her political opponents.  Greene called for the execution of Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), liking a post that sought to remove Rep. Pelosi with “a bullet to the head.”  In another incident, she outdid herself by explicitly accusing Pelosi of treason and saying:

“She’s a traitor to our country, she’s guilty of treason…She took an oath to protect American citizens and uphold our laws. And she gives aid and comfort to our enemies who illegally invade our land. That’s what treason is. And by our law, representatives and senators can be kicked out and no longer serve in our government. And it’s, uh, it’s a crime punishable by death is what treason is. Nancy Pelosi is guilty of treason.”

Nor is this the first time that Greene openly flirted with violence against the United States government and government officials. As I noted in 2022, Greene claimed that the capitol rioters would have been successful if she had planned January 6th. Such comments are disgusting but especially insulting because she didn’t have the courage to own up to her own words. Instead, she claimed she was joking and that it was taken out of context, but that defense has become so common on the right that it no longer merits serious consideration, especially with someone like Greene. Again and again, Greene delves into the worst elements of our politics.

    Expelling Greene

It may seem to some that this article has served as an indictment against Greene. A list of her sins, so to speak. To some extent, it is. Greene’s behavior, both in her role as a private citizen engaging in politics, and as a member of the House of Representatives, necessitates a clear and concise record of her wrongdoing. Beyond reiterating a list of grievances against Greene, this article serves as a reminder that Rep. Greene was always unfit to be in Congress. Always has and always will be.

So long as she continues to conduct herself in this manner and so long as she continues to flirt with far-right extremism and violence, she will remain entirely unworthy of holding any public office, much less a seat in Congress. If the American people are expected to respect Congress, then perhaps it is time for Congress to respect them and remove one of its worst members from power.

Hello everyone, I hope you all are doing well. I’m happy to announce that I am currently finishing up a video response to Candace Owens over her previous coverage of Russia’s quality of life compared to that of the United States. I would have released this earlier, but some serious technological issues with my microphone had to be dealt with and have only recently been addressed.

Regardless, the video will be out on YouTube on Friday at 3 pm CST. Thank you very much, and have a wonderful day.

  • Israel Could Face Charges from the International Criminal Court

While the ICC has yet to announce any official charges, recent reporting suggests that the ICC is about to strike.

justflix, CC BY-SA 4.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Israeli officials are worried that some of their leaders could face criminal charges by the International Criminal Court. The New York Times, citing officials familiar with the matter, reported yesterday morning that Israeli officials believe that the ICC will bring charges against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials associated with the Israel-Hamas war. While unlikely to result in any arrests, such a move could drastically alter the current war.

    What is the ICC?

The International Criminal Court (ICC) was established in 2002. Not to be mistaken with the International Court of Justice, the ICC seeks to investigate and prosecute serious crimes such as genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and wars of aggression. It has 124 member states that recognize its authority, although several countries, such as the United States, India, Russia, and China, are not members of the international body.

In the decades following World War 2, efforts were made to establish an international standard for dealing with crimes that exceeded the usual intra-national jurisdiction standards. From 1945 to 1946, over 20 Nazi officials and several organizations were tried for war crimes at Nuremberg, demonstrating a need for an international mechanism to hold such criminals accountable. The trial resulted in 161 convictions, and 37 were executed. Similarly, 11 countries joined together to establish a war crimes tribunal for Japanese war criminals between 1946 and 1948, which resulted in the conviction of 23 war criminals. Seven were executed, and sixteen were sentenced to life in prison.

Despite these pushes for international justice and legal standards, tensions between nations and questions of jurisdiction, many of which remain unsolved, meant that until the early 2000s, the Court began to take shape as an organization with enforcement powers. Since then, the Court has increasingly become an integral but still developing part of holding serious criminals accountable.

What Does this Mean for the Israel-Hamas War?

While 124 member states recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction, the relationship between the Court and Israel is complicated. While many countries recognize the authority of the ICC, Israel is not one of them and has previously stated that it will not cooperate with investigations by the ICC into its soldiers and citizens after ICC prosecutors announced plans to investigate war crimes in Palestine.

On Friday, April 26th, 2024, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated this position in a post, saying:

“Under my leadership, Israel will never accept any attempt by the ICC to undermine its inherent right of self-defense.

The threat to seize the soldiers and officials of the Middle East’s only democracy and the world’s only Jewish state is outrageous. We will not bow to it.

Israel will continue to wage to victory our just war against genocidal terrorists, and we will never stop defending ourselves.

While the ICC will not affect Israel’s actions, it would set a dangerous precedent that threatens the soldiers and officials of all democracies fighting savage terrorism and wanton aggression.”

The hostility to the Court’s jurisdiction comes amid the month-long war that emerged after October 7th, where Hamas killed an estimated 1,200 people and kidnapped over 200. Since then, Israel has waged a war to destroy Hamas but has repeatedly faced accusations of war crimes. In December of last year, The Washington Post published an exclusive alleging Israel used White Phosphorous made and provided by the United States. According to the Gazan Health Ministry, an estimated 34,000 people have died since the war began.

If the ICC pursues charges against Israeli officials, as Israeli officials seem to believe, it could put Israel in a difficult position. While they would not be the only ones facing charges, as Hamas officials are also expected to face charges from the ICC, it would be damaging to Israel’s reputation. The ICC has rendered judgment against numerous officials, such as Muammar Gaddafi, Omar al-Bashir, and Vladimir Putin, establishing it as a prosecutor of some of the worst criminals and leaders.

If Israel were subject to charges, it would necessarily damage Israel’s reputation on the world stage and undermine the nation’s ability to wage war with good standing. More than that, however, charges by the ICC would mean that all 124 member states would be obligated to arrest any officials officials who face charges. While it is unlikely that ICC countries will attempt to retrieve alleged criminals within Israeli territory, it could limit the travel of said officials. Previously, when Russian President Vladimir Putin was charged with the abduction of Ukrainian children in the Russo-Ukrainian War and was forced to stay within allied territories to avoid arrest.

Additionally, the United States could see its relationship with the Court, which has been contentious and could further deteriorate. Previously, the Trump administration sanctioned several ICC officials, only for the Biden administration to rescind them.

While it remains unclear if the ICC will finalize and pursue charges against any Israelis, it would be one of the most transformative legal actions against Israel to date. However, until the ICC follows through or retractions are made, how the international community will react to the ongoing war remains uncertain.

  • Tennessee Won’t Regulate Guns, but They Will Arm the Teachers

Instead of taking steps to protect students, Republicans in Tennessee have decided to engage in security theater

Photo by Somchai Kongkamsri on Pexels.com

Tennessee is at again. When they’re not attempting to expel Democratic legislators for protesting, they’re demonstrating once again that they will do anything they can to avoid taking on the gun manufacturers. This time, they have decided to arm teachers.

While arming teachers is nothing new —the idea has been floated several times before, and nearly half the states in the country allow some form of armed teachers—it is especially frustrating to see. Even as parents and teachers alike continue to call out Tennessee’s legislature for its failure to adopt policies that will help, Republican legislators continue to plug their ears and ignore the pleas of their constituents.

In a famous instance, two members of the legislature, Representatives Justin Jones (D) and Rep. Justin Pearson (D), were expelled from the state House after they, along with another Representative, led protests on the floor to demand stronger gun regulations after the Covenant School shooting. The representatives were eventually sent back to the state legislature by their constituents in a rebuke of GOP leadership, but the fact that they were expelled in the first place is illustrative of the fact that the GOP in Tennessee is entirely uninterested in listening to the people they represent.

They don’t want to listen to teachers, who overwhelmingly oppose being armed, or the people who show up at the state capitol to demand greater action. Why? Because it’s easier to pretend to fix a problem than to get things done. Even as Republicans claim they are trying to protect people and act as though anyone who is calling them out is politicizing tragedy, they do nothing to protect the people they claim to represent.

  • Stop Praising Republicans for Doing the Bare Minimum

Republicans keep getting praised for doing their job. The bar is far too low.

Office of Speaker Mike Johnson, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons

It is official. Aid will continue going to Ukraine. An aid package once thought to be dead thanks to Republican infight passed the House and Senate thanks in part to the work of Speaker Mike Johnson. Whereas it was previously thought that the House would be unable to pass the aid packages, Speaker Johnson split the aid package into four separate votes, forcing the House to consider each piece of aid bit by bit. That move, in turn, led to Ukrainian aid passing through the House, where it eventually passed in the Senate. While I am glad to see that we will continue to support Ukraine, the idea that Mike Johnson should be praised for his actions is beyond ridiculous.

    Bipartisan praise

Multiple officials, Democrat and Republican, have gone out of their way to celebrate Mike Johnson’s moves and praised him for getting the aid passed. Michael McCaul (R-Tex), who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee, proudly touted Johnson’s work, saying:

“I am so proud of the speaker, Mike Johnson. He went through a transformation…At the end of the day, a profile in courage is putting the nation above yourself — and that’s what he did. He said, ‘At the end of the day, I’m going to be on the right side of history, irrespective of my job,’ and I think that was what I admired so much.”

Ro Khanna (D-CA) echoed those thoughts as well, saying, “I disagree with Speaker Johnson on many issues, and I’ve been very critical of him…But he did the right thing here, and he deserves to keep his job ’til the end of his term.”

Again and again, members of the House have given Speaker Johnson a pat on the back for his ability to lead. Even though his Speakership could be at risk, it is another example of weak politicians achieving the bare minimum and getting rewarded.

    A low bar

While Speaker Johnson undeniably made good moves to get Ukrainian aid passed, and he does deserve some credit for doing so, it took months to get it done. Republicans repeatedly tied Ukrainian aid to a border deal that they wanted, only to get cold feet when Donald Trump pushed them to do so. While Johnson wasn’t responsible for the Senate GOP’s decision, he still held the line with them, tying Ukrainian aid to the southern border.

His switch on the issue to a more sensible position and subsequent efforts to pass it don’t change this. Had Speaker Johnson taken the initiative months prior and pushed back against his party’s so-called ‘America First’ wing, Ukraine could have received the support it needed much sooner. That delay will almost certainly harm the U.S. reputation on the world stage, and it was partially exacerbated due to Johnson’s desire to appeal to his far-right party members.

Johnson isn’t the first or only Republican who contributed to a problem only to fix it later. Former Vice President Mike Pence spent four years praising and supporting Trump, even as Trump threatened the well-being of the republic and engaged in blatant corruption. Even as Trump equivocated between Nazis and the people protesting them, Mike Pence stood with him. It was only when Trump crossed into the realm of violent absurdity on January 6th that he did his duty and certified the election. A move he was legally obligated to make. Despite such a move being expected of him, Pence still received praise for his brave decision not to break the law and disregard the people’s will.

The fact that the bar is so low that not overthrowing democracy is considered exceptional is ridiculous. It is one thing to recognize the significance of Pence and Johnson’s actions, but it is another thing entirely to pretend that Americans don’t deserve leaders who do more than meet the smallest of expectations.

Speakers should be able to get emergency aid passed effectively, and vice presidents shouldn’t unquestioningly support their boss as he tears at the fabric of the nation’s democracy. These words should not have to be said, much less written, but it also shouldn’t take a violent attack on the Capitol and resounding incompetence in Congress to get leaders to do what is necessary. If we are going to see an improvement in our politics, then we should stop promoting every politician who does the bare minimum. We deserve better.

  • Candace Owens Abuses the Bombing of Dresden: A Disrespectful Abuse of History

Not satisfied with getting kicked from The Daily Wire, Candace Owens is now abusing the historical memory of the Dresden bombing

    By Deutsche Fotothek‎, CC BY-SA 3.0 de, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=7937338

Candace Owens is back, and she is as conspiratorial as ever. Not satisfied with her firing from The Daily Wire, Owens is once again playing to sympathy for Nazis. This time, alleging that historians have been hiding the infamous bombing of Dresden, inaccurately portraying it as a deliberately sacrilegious attack on Christians.

    Candace Owens abuses history

Earlier this Tuesday, Owens argued that Dresden was “incinerated” on Ash Wednesday, implying that the attack on the German city was a deliberate attempt to attack Christians. She further asserted that “Christians will no longer be told that we aren’t allowed to know or discuss our history.”

The post, seemingly brought up randomly, is problematic for several reasons. Firstly, the bombing of Dresden was not a single event but a multitude of raids conducted by the Allies between 13 and 15 February 1945 during World War 2. It was part of the larger Allied efforts to destroy the German war machine and overthrow Adolf Hitler and his Nazi cohorts.

There was no deliberate attempt to bomb Christians on Ash Wednesday. Rather, the bombings occurred over several days in a long-lasting policy by the British and American Air Forces known as ‘strategic bombing.’ The policy sought to destroy every mechanism the Germans had to wage war against the Allies. Everything that could be used to support the Nazi war effort, such as factories and railroads, became a target for destruction. The goal was to obliterate the morale of the German people to fight. Simply put, Dresden was a military operation, not an attempt to butcher Christians.

The other problem with Owens’ post is that it explicitly argues that there is some cover-up or unwillingness to address the historical reality of Dresden. The idea being that historians will never give Dresden the respect it deserves because of a supposed effort to oppress Christians. That is especially ridiculous when you consider the people doing the bombing; the United Kingdom and the United States were then and are now still mostly Christian.

Owens’ insinuations are nonsensical. Dresden has been the subject of many books, articles, and works that evaluate its morality and legality. The idea that there isn’t a historical evaluation of Dresden is absurd, and Owens knows it.

The Nazi problem and memorializing the innocent

Normally, if this were all Owens had said on the topic or primed her audience to look for, I would leave it at that, but the post mentioned above is not alone. Owens has brought up Dresden repeatedly, tying her initial implications of Christian hunting to larger, more legitimate ethical difficulties created by the historical memory of the bombing.

In response to another user, Owens notes that British newspapers at the time reported an estimated 600,000 refugees from Russia in the city. This is also likely false, as the city of Dresden itself had a population of roughly 600,000 people. So, unless Owens expects the entire city to be compromised of refugees, that number is certainly incorrect.

Also, Owens is leaving out important information. Specifically, she doesn’t mention the actual death count. If she did, she would be walking into a larger, more frustrating discussion which, of course, involves Nazis.

The problem with Dresden’s historical memory is that it is mixed with two major concerns: the undeniable suffering and death of innocent civilians and the reality that the Nazis themselves twisted facts to create a false equivalence between the Allies and the Nazi regime. This is on full display when it comes to the death count.

Immediately after Dresden was bombed, Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi’s chief propagandist, claimed that Dresden wasn’t a military target in any capacity and inflated the death count to tens of thousands of people dying to the hundreds of thousands. The city itself investigated in 2008 and found that about 25,000 died in the attack, and later reports showed that Dresden was targeted to prevent troop movements to the Eastern front.

Goebbels’ claims were, of course, nonsense, but they spread. Even after his death, Goebbels’ lies still hold sway. Infamous Holocaust deniers like David Irving have helped propagate the myth that hundreds of thousands died in the attack on Dresden, and among Neo-Nazis in Germany itself, Dresden has become a rallying cry. In 2005, approximately 5,000 neo-Nazis marched through the city to memorialize those killed in the bombing in an event that the Guardian called “the largest Neo-Nazi demonstration in Germany’s postwar history.”

In one instance in the German parliament, members of the far-right NPD or National Democratic Party of Germany refused to memorialize the civilians killed by the Nazi forces during the war, declaring they would only memorialize the German victims. One NPD member, Juergen Gansel, referred to the bombing as the “Holocaust of bombs.” Dresden is a part of modern Neo-Nazi mythology.

    The Responsibility of Memory

The focus on Dresden, while warranted when done by the right people, is part of a larger approach by Neo-Nazis to create a false equivalency between the Allies and Nazis. If Dresden’s memory is handled poorly, it can be disastrous and lend itself to people like Gansel, who abuse the tragedy in their bigoted ways.

Owens’ random focus on Dresden is, therefore, caught up in a large network of propaganda and fascist apologists. Adequately addressing the horrors of Dresden and the historical memory of the people who died there requires nuance, reason, and empathy. It requires a deep commitment to undermining Nazi propaganda and ensuring that one’s arguments don’t contribute to their bigotry. Owens past and current behavior show that she has none of that critical dedication. She has consistently demonstrated that she has no interest in such work. Owens is the same person who defended Kanye’s antisemitism, downplayed the enslavement of the Taino, and claimed that there is a secret group of Jewish people controlling Hollywood. Owens is the last person who should be handling something as complicated and painful as Dresden.

The people of Dresden should be able to look back on their history without antisemitic grifters disregarding their concerns, making it more painful and difficult to do so. If Owens truly cared about the Bombing of Dresden, she could have done everyone a favor and kept her opinions to herself and let the people who live there today decide how they deal with such a painful event.
